Luther Bachelder Jar From Maine
This 11.5-inch storage jar has a clear glaze over a dark brick red body, incised "squiggle" decoration as well as receded decoration around the shoulder. The wing-like handles are not typical of Maine red ware, yet Luther C. Bachelder worked in Exeter, Maine as a potter from 1830 until he moved to Wisconsin in 1845. Bachelder was born in Concord, NH in 1804 and died in 1850. His sons Carlton and Calvin continued the business in Menasha making salt glazed stoneware. The jar is inscribed in script on the bottom, "Oct 29, 1837 / Luther C. Bachelder." Bachelder was the grandfather of Oscar Louis Bachelder who founded the Omar Khayyam Pottery in Luther, North Carolina.
